Portrait commission final... Mission accomplished!

The client called me this morning to express her satisfaction with the "close to final" version published in my blog yesterday...

... needless to say, this was music to my ears! You never know with portraiture... and I certainly wouldn't force a customer to take a picture that "doesn't hit home"!

These kids reside in British Columbia, therefore I didn't have the prerogative to study them in person. The videos I had at my disposal helped compensate in part for this lack. In the end, I decided to express the boy's exuberance and the little girl's obvious determination. The distance between the two was meant to create a tension. The placement of the smaller girl on the right helped increase her importance to the viewer, in my view.

Note: Trying to get the best lighting for this picture, I couldn't avoid subtle cast shadows from trees... however, this was an excellent opportunities to test "high res" photography with my new camera...

Note to self: "With this project and the most recent ones, I have come to realize that I can obtain smooth blending easily both on raw canvas and on primed canvas despite fast drying acrylics and the dryer in-house climate in the winter time. Although my inclination is still to go the route of expressionism, I see an opportunity in mixing styles (expressionism and realism) to create compelling and colorful images. In terms of mark making, my next frontier is splattering!"

Portrait commission - close to final.... Nothing that 1000 iterations can't resolve!

I spent 3 full days "approximating" facial features from these two kids... instead of my usual 3 hours of painting time on canvas...

Painting kids remains a real challenge... a big piece of humble pie every now and then... is what the doctor ordered!

Note: In a moment of utmost "incertitude", I used a loose piece of canvas for this one... stretching the canvas will avoid any lighting artifacts from wobbling...

Portrait commission... Strike one!

I met my match with this one...

This 3 year old with a strong chin and square jaws, was a bit too much for me. I ended up with a 10 year old.... relying on the measuring power of my eyes only. Nothing that can't be resolved with a crowbar! In the end, no matter what the method, results count!

Note to self: "After a few months on raw canvas and large formats, I seem to have lost my capability to work on primed canvas and small formats... well, never a dull moment!"

Subnote to self: "I don't mind the minimalist photographic look along with sketchy parts... gotta keep that in the backburner, in my continuous saga for a contemporary style!"

Ultimate fighter III final... Getting a feel for a new way of seeing!

This third pass was associated with a certain degree of stiffness, as I'm breaking new ground...

In this very final" version, I've made slight modifications to provide a better balance for this composition...

.... different lighting conditions (sunny day) account for color variations...

I still need to fine tune certain techniques... the rest is getting used to a new look for this series. Part of the attraction at first was the prospect of exploiting the abstract quality of fighters in a close-up view. I now feel that I should go one step further... and not provide all the answers to the viewer!

Ultimate fighter III - step II... Still on the experimental mode!

After a short hiatus from painting, I finally slapped 2 coats of paint on my last painting in progress...

I'm still fine tuning a new dripping technique using opaque colors (as opposed to transparent ones) and a pouring medium...  and, not surprisingly, I have experienced some "undesirable effects" along the way... like splattering my studio walls as opposed to my canvas!

I have recently made some steps in a new direction...and despite a certain level of anxiety, I feel compelled to pursue in that vain... due to some irresistible force beyond my control! I've got a ticket to ride... and I don't care...

Textural effects on video - flock II

After starting a new series, there is always a period of mental readjustment before I'm able to hit "full stride". My intent is always to forge ahead with some innovative approach (for me!). However, this is easier said than done, and the first few paintings of a series usually threatens to drag some of my old ways into the future!

With one painting to finish and a portrait commission to start, I've decided to enjoy the moment before getting into the action of things. I've been using my new video software... perhaps as a means to more fully integrate some of the things that I've learned so far... in this case, in the domain of textural effects...

Duo exhibition 2011 - Video report....

As a follow up to my previous report, here is a collation of video clips and photos from the vernissage and the exhibition (click on the image to activate)...

In a nutshell, an opportunity for me to leverage cheap imaging and video technologies in the interest of more clearly "painting the picture" for those who didn't have a chance to attend. We thank you for your interest...

Duo exhibition 2011 - Mission accomplished... thanks to friends and art lovers in the Montreal area!

This year, I decided to do a duo exhibition with Claude Landry, a Montreal artist that I got to know better over the last couple of years through weekly Tai Chi classes in the West Island of Montreal. Merci Claude for your partnership!

As usual, the installation part went like a breeze owing to two former "Princesses of the Nile" (a troop of baladi dancers): Nicole ( my so-called "muse") and Rita. They both participated in my two previous shows in this venue, so they are quite experienced! Their creativity is handy when it comes to the placement of paintings.

Here is the installation completed (you may click on any slide to view in a larger format)...

In 2010, I used two female models for my series on Yoga and women's eyes (the two middle upper pictures in this collage, Geneviève and Val). Beyond the inspiration that they provided me, they nicely complemented our efforts to diffuse any pertinent information about our planned exhibition. It appears that our synergy as a team was perfect since close to 100 people showed up at the vernissage!

Barrie McCleod , a successful fashion photographer from Montreal and a friend of Claude Landry, was nice enough to make himself available during a good part of the evening. His photographic record stands out to say the least (this is but a very partial selection)....

A special thank you to Lyne, coordinator at the Pierrefonds cultural center, and all staff members at the center who helped in the organizational aspect of this event. Lyne, you literally blew my top off when I saw one of the four giant electronic billboards advertizing the exhibition...

In closing, a special thank you as well to everyone who came at the exhibition and to those who decided to acquire one of my paintings. Your appreciation for my art touches me profoundly. Moreover, your feedback was invaluable to me and will be a great source of motivation for the elaboration of my future series. À la prochaine!!!!
