Pursuing acrylic paste...

My last few paintings reflect my recent preoccupation with pure colors and impasto paint...

My process includes a black ink rendition, the addition of semi-transparent colors and finally the application of thicker paint passages. Each step could be a finished product and, in essence, each step reflects a technique that I like. I don't let go of anything!

Notes: for me, my transitions to different approaches are usually slow!I think my next step is to use all the above techniques simultaneously and with total freedom!

Some meandering with acrylic paste techniques...

My transition from fluid paint to impasto paint has been gradual over the last few months. Initially, it was a mixture of both techniques, and now I realize that I'm really after maintaining this kind of freshness. I went really thick with this painting below...

... but finally landed with a better balance with this one, in my view...

My art is becoming more and more engaged!

An exploration of bodies....

These past few months, I have reoriented my painting style, going from fluid paint to impasto paint. I'm also shying away from faces in an attempt to leverage my 6-7 years of live model drawing experience. These screen shots are lifted from my Website: 2019-2020 – Ron Gravel

For the most part, these works have been illustrative as I am adjusting to the demands of impasto paint. In the future I want my impasto work to be much looser (at least in part), emphasizing paint and brush strokes beyond the subject matter.

P.S. These days, I'm inspired by the chaos in the world!

Upon my return from a trip to Kauai: a transitional work of art!

After working for a whole year on a major Montreal exhibition in October/November 2019 (see previous post)...

... a two-week stay in Kauai allowed me to mentally rethink my art. An encounter with a native Hawaiian woman while lunching with my wife and two longtime friends prompted me to do her portrait (I sort of made her a promise)!

Using her facial features, I made an attempt to depict the power of native Hawaiians and their oneness with the ocean. In the future, I want my art to evolve towards more freedom and perhaps different directions.

Some more exploration on the use of fluid paint...

This summer, I have continued my exploration with free-flowing acrylic paints and inks...

Some of these works are in preparation for an October 2019 exhibition: "Regards et transparence" to be announced shortly. The title reflects the general fascination for human eyes and the techniques that I used in the realization of these works.
